Offshore cables on topside modules

Topsides are surface installations of an offshore oil and gas platform above water surface. There are different kinds of structures with a topside module in the offshore industry. Similarly, there are several types of offshore cables on topside modules.

Topside modules contain all the necessary functions to operate the platform, such as:

  • Processing facilities for oil and gas.
  • Utilities to generate power.
  • Living quarters.
  • Water or gas injection installations.
  • A helicopter deck
  • Drilling equipment for the drilling ships or rigs

Each unit has its own specific requirements for cables.

A typical topside module has an extensive cabling system. As a result, offshore cables need to fit into this system in terms of weight and size. A reduction in weight and size of the cables provides a significant impact on the construction and costs of the platform. Designers and operators are always looking for ways to reduce weight and space without compromising cable performance and personnel safety.

Offshore topside module cables

The offshore oil and gas industry demands the highest standards in cable solutions such as instrumentation, low/medium voltage and fibre optic cables. The cable solutions need to withstand harsh conditions in a hazardous environment on offshore platforms and ensure the greatest possible safety of the installations on the platform.

The offshore cables on topside modules need to withstand oil, salt water spray, abrasion, heat, cold and mechanical abuse. In the event of a fire emergency, the cables must guarantee the safety of personnel and equipment. Certain essential cables are also required to function for a prolonged period during a fire. Cables in this industry are exposed to oil spills, drilling mud or chemicals in many areas.

Topside platform applications require low smoke zero-halogen cables. The cables need to be flame retardant, fire resistant and/or mud resistant. Compared to traditional cable materials, low smoke zero-halogen materials emit no more than 0.5% HCl. This is in compliance with BS EN 50267 and IEC 60754-1.
